What do others think about this sentiment in a recent Seth Godin  All abstract strategy discussions are useless Blog Post?

I think he is right. I've seen too many mindless strategy declarations that are not framed by real decisions about products and features.

Paul,

I have to agree with Seth, even though I tend to spend a lot of time on strategy. While I am a proponent of strategy and strategic thinking, I agree that strategy without a concrete plan of action is wasteful intellectual game playing. I think the most successful organizations create smart strategies that form the context in which tactics are executed, and the linkage between tactics and strategy is always explicit. It's surprising (and a bit depressing) when a company operational habits have no apparent relation to it's purported strategy.

I would mostly agree with this. A strategy without a plan is a road to nowhere. However, I would place some abstract strategy discussions in the bucket of exploratory discussions. What should we do and why? You need to have these and come to agreement first, then once you're aligned on the goal, figure out the plan to achieve it.

I love it. Too often we talk about "strategy" but we're not committed to it because no concrete action -especially will to make a difficult decision- is in the cards.
